How Does Mold or Blank Availability Affect the Price?

Every fiberglass fish replica begins with a mold or an unfinished blank. If we already have the correct mold, the production cost can be different from a project that requires us to purchase a blank from another supplier. Availability also varies by species, size, body shape, and pose.

This is why a standard pricing chart can be misleading: it does not account for the actual starting point of the project. Mount This has access to thousands of freshwater and saltwater options, including some species and sizes that have not yet been added to our website.

How Do Length and Body Shape Affect the Price?

Length matters, but it does not tell the whole story. Extra large fish mounts that have oversize girths require much more material per linear inch then smaller girth fish of the same size.

When possible, provide:

• Total length from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail
• Girth at the widest point
• A clear side photograph
• Additional photographs showing fins, markings, or unusual features

How Does Species Affect the Price?

For common species the specie does not necessarily effect the price but with rare species from foreign countries, the fish mount blank may be difficult and expensive to source.  Other times the specie's anatomy may be harder to mold, consisting of many mold parts. For example a small rainbow trout mold will be either a 2 or 3 part mold. Now lets consider the Alaskan King Crab; each leg consists of 2 mold parts and the body is also two parts therefore an 8 leg King Crab may be made up of 18 mold parts.  To cast all 18 mold parts is much more time intensive and more materials costs then a 2 part 18" Rainbow Trout.

Does a Full Mount Cost the Same as a Half Mount?

No, the costs involved with producing a full mount fish replica is greater then the costs of a single sided fish mount. The time and materials to produce a half mount are actually less then 50% of a full mount fish replica of the same size (length).

Do Pose and Display Direction Affect the Quote?

It can but this all depends on how strict the customer may be regarding which direction they want it to face and whether or not they need a specific shape. When requesting a quote provide us with your choice of whether it should face left or right, and if you perhaps want an upcurve or a downcurve or maybe a tail walking pose. If we do not have the specific specie size, direction and pose, we will contact our industry contacts to try and source your particular request.  Whatever we find that is closest to your request will be priced based off the blank cost as well as the labor costs to provide a finished replica ready to hang.

Does Custom Photo Matching Affect the Quote?

Yes, when a customer provides a photo reference we charge an additional fee to custom paint the replica to accurately match the customers catch.  The photo provided follows the fish blank from station to station where our production technicians have monitors to include rips and tears in fins and tail and other marks that showcase the individual characteristics of the fish.  The reference photograph helps the artist reproduce the colors, markings, scars, and other identifying details of the actual fish. The clarity of the photographs and the amount of custom detail requested can affect the work involved.

Specialty mounting hardware, protective crate, or freight delivery will add additional costs to the invoice. When comparing quotes, make sure you understand what is included and what will be listed separately. Why We Do Not Use One Universal Price Per Inch

A per-inch number appears simple, but it can create the wrong expectation. Consider two fish of the same length. We may already have an appropriate mold for one, while the other requires a purchased blank. One may use a standard pose, while the other requires detailed photo matching, a specific display position and oversized shipping.

Those projects should not automatically cost the same simply because the fish are the same length. Our goal is to identify the best available option first and then price the actual work involved.

How Is a Fiberglass Replica Different From a Traditional Skin Mount?

A traditional skin mount uses parts of the harvested fish. A fiberglass replica is selected from a mold and painted to represent the catch using measurements and photographs.

Replica mounts are a strong choice for conservational minded anglers because the fish does not need to be kept. They can also recreate a memorable fish from an earlier trip when photographs and measurements are available and even without photographs.  But the one difference that takes the cake is that the replica will last the lifetime of the customer instead of falling apart 15-20 years down the line as traditional fish mount taxidermy.
