One might recognize the name Sheepshead, not as a fish, but as part of Brooklyn, New York, Sheepshead Bay. Indeed, this bay was named after the Sheepshead fish. Sheepshead were once commonly found in the bay’s waters. Their numbers drastically decreased over the years in the bay due to polluted waters, but recently small numbers have been found once again swimming in the northern waters. Sheepshead are primarily a Western Atlantic fish and found in the Gulf of Mexico. A hot spot for them is the southwest waters of Florida. Sheepshead have a tight body shape and are grey or green yellowish in color with several dark stripes with a length ranging between 10 and 20 inches and typically weigh just under 5 pounds but can weigh up to 20 pounds. The dorsal spines are very sharp. Sheepshead have several rows of teeth. The most noticeable ones are their front row shaped like human teeth. Mature Sheepshead will have incisors as well as molar teeth. They have a double row of molars on the lower jaw and three rows on the upper. Sheepshead use their teeth to crush shells of crustaceans, their preferred food choice. Sheepshead are popular with bridge and pier fisherman as they tend to be found around pilings. They like rocky ocean floors where they can swim in and out of hiding places. They are not known to be migratory but will swim migrate when water temperatures are cooler in the winter. Although hard to clean, Sheepshead fish are still a popular seafood choice and can be a relatively easy catch.
